Your Ephesus day

Shore excursion, skip-the-line ticket, or eight people in a minibus.

Four out of five tours sold in this port finish at the same gate. What separates them is who you share the day with, whether the entry fee is already paid, and how much slack sits between the last stop and the gangway.

Where the coaches go

Six places a Kuşadası morning can end up.

A Roman capital under pine trees, a chapel on a switchback road, white mineral terraces three hours east, a hill village pouring fruit wine, a castle town with a basilica on it, and the coves the gulets run to.

Beyond the ruins

Pamukkale, Şirince and the Meander valley cities.

Kuşadası sits at the top of a valley with three more ancient cities in it and a hill village that bottles its own fruit wine. Pamukkale is the outlier: three hours each way, an early start, and a whole day gone.

Off the ship, into the water

The Kuşadası coast does more than ferry people to ruins.

Gulets leave the marina most mornings for the coves under the Dilek peninsula, where the pine comes down to the rock and the water stays cold into July. Behind the resort strip the tracks belong to jeeps, quads and a string of stables.

Before you sail

Four Kuşadası bookings that will not wait for the morning.

This port runs on two clocks: the ship’s all-aboard time and the opening hours of places that shut in the afternoon. These are the days where turning up on the quay and asking around does not work.

  1. 01Pamukkale Small Group Tour from Kusadasi Port/HotelsThree hours out and three back over the mountains. It leaves early, it returns late, and there is no half-day version of it.
  2. 023-Hour Private Ephesus, Terrace Houses, Cruiser OnlyThe Terrace Houses need a second ticket, sold separately and bought before you reach the walkway. A tour that has not included it will not stop.
  3. 03ALL INCLUSIVE Private Ephesus, House of Virgin Mary with lunchMeryemana closes in the late afternoon and the shuttle road up is single lane. On a four-ship day the queue on that hill decides your whole itinerary.
  4. 04Private Tour in Ephesus and Traditional Turkish Bath from PortA proper hammam is ninety minutes with the scrub, the foam and the tea afterwards. The good ones are full on the days the big ships are in.
Sacred ground

A chapel three popes have visited, and a basilica with no roof.

Meryemana is one stone room at the end of a switchback road above the ruins, identified in the 1890s from the visions of a German nun who never travelled. Below it a spring runs into three taps and the wall beside them is thick with knotted paper. Down in Selçuk the Basilica of St John stands open to the sky on the citadel hill.

Only here

Three things that only happen on this stretch of the Aegean.

Ruined theatres are everywhere in Turkey. Frescoed Roman townhouses under a modern roof, a house of pilgrimage on a wooded ridge, and one standing column of a wonder of the world are not.

Under the canopy

The Terrace Houses

Six Roman townhouses climb the slope above Curetes Street, kept under a modern roof with glass walkways over the floors. The wall paintings are still on the plaster and the marble is laid in patterns nobody has bettered since. It is a second ticket on top of site entry, it takes about forty minutes, and it is the part of Ephesus most day tours quietly leave out.

On Bülbül Dağı

Meryemana

A single-room stone house at the top of a wooded switchback, seven kilometres above the ruins. A bedridden nun in Germany described the place in the 1820s; a French priest went looking in 1891 and found the foundations where she said. Mass is said daily, three popes have come, and the road up is one lane with a queue on cruise days.

One column left

The Temple of Artemis

A wonder of the ancient world stood in the field below Selçuk castle, four times the footprint of the Parthenon. What is left is a single re-erected column in a marsh, usually with a stork nesting on the capital. It costs nothing, it takes ten minutes, and every guide will check whether you still want to stop.

Three gates, three tickets

Ephesus charges at three gates, and most arguments here are about which of them you have already paid.

Everything at Ephesus →
★★★★★★★★★★5.0· 8,527 travellers on the most-booked Ephesus day

Site entry, the Terrace Houses under their canopy, and the museum in Selçuk are three separate tickets. A cheap tour usually means the first one is on you at the turnstile; an all-inclusive one means it is not. These three carry more travellers than anything else out of the port.

Off the gangway

Met at the quay, back before all-aboard

4–6h· from $16· port pickup

The whole product is the return time. Operators working the cruise trade know the all-aboard clock better than the ship’s own excursion desk, and price the risk of missing it into the day.

The gate queue

Entry bought before you arrive

3–5h· from $7· ticket included

On a four-ship day the queue at the lower gate runs long past the car park. A tour holding your ticket walks in at the side; one that does not puts you back in the line with everyone else.

Group size

Eight people instead of forty

5–7h· from $22· small group

A coach party moves at the speed of its slowest count. Eight in a minibus reaches the Terrace Houses before the queue forms and still has time for lunch in Şirince on the way back.

When the ships are all in

Four cruise ships, one gate, forty degrees.

Kuşadası can take five thousand people off the water in a morning, and almost all of them are going to the same place. Ephesus has no shade past the theatre. The answer is the early slot and then somewhere with a roof: a marble hammam, a long lunch under vines, a cellar in Şirince.
